Deeply committed to producing original dance works, the Kate Foley Company has been performing for stage, film, and television audiences for over 10 years. The Company's work addresses issues of cross-cultural immigrant experiences, homelessness and the economic recession, the artist's role in society and the soul's search for home. Kate Foley's choreographic style juxtaposes and blends classical ballet, modern dance, popular dance, yoga, and traditional folk dance from Eastern Europe; its post-modern delivery uses eclectic and multi-dimensional sound environments, found materials, multi-media displays and community participants. Kate creates a unpredictable kinetic dialogue between the use of formal materials and aspects drawn from life outside the theater setting with humor, compelling drama and grace.
After the company was founded in New York City in 1986, they quickly began performing at many of New York City's most innovative performance spaces, including the Dance Theater Workshop, The Danspace at St. Mark's Church, The 92nd Street Y and Performance Space 122. Upon moving to San Francisco in 1989 new works were created for local venues such as the Mozart Festival, The California Academy of Science, Footwork, New Performance Gallery, the Theater Artaud Summertime Dance Project, The Emeryville Outdoor Dance Festival, the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House and Esprit Corporate Headquarters. The company has also been presented by Sushi Gallery's "Danse Fraiche" series in San Diego, and The Seattle Arts Festival.
Nationally renowned artists working in stage and site-specific performance, film, and video have collaborated with the Kate Foley Company over the last several years. Among those artists are composer Brooks Williams, a Bessie nominee for his 1988 collaboration with Foley, composer Nik Phelps of the Clubfoot Orchestra, media artist Rea Tajiri, who was twice featured in Whitney Museum of American Art Biennials, photographers Richard Beenan and Joan Barker, and filmmaker David Michalak.
Company projects, in addition to live performances, reflect the organization's commitment to serving its community. The Company produces HOUSE OF DANCE, a bi-monthly cable show featuring the work of modern dance choreographers. For three years Ms. Foley directed "Left Field", a workshop in which choreographers receive feedback on new work at the San Francisco Institute of Choreography. Supported by the Tacoma Arts Commission, residency activities there included the creation of a new work, open rehearsals, performances and movement workshops for at-risk youth. Supported by the Esprit Foundation the company conducted similar workshops in the Bay Area, including a month-long Summer Dance Intensive at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House. Local collaborators include the Slavonijo Kolo Performance Ensemble, based at the Slavonic Cultural Center, where the company performs in local festivals.
Every year since its inception, the Kate Foley Company has been the recipient of patron, grant and foundation support from such prestigious arts organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, Grants for the Arts of the San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, The San Francisco Arts Commission, The Zellerbach Family Fund, The Esprit Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, The Harkness Foundations for Dance, Meet the Composer/CA, The Bay Area Fund for Dance, Carlisle Foundation, San Francisco Foundation, and Tacoma Arts Commission.
