About New Dance Alliance

Incorporated in 1989, New Dance Alliance (NDA) is an arts service organization whose mission is to actively promote emerging forms of innovative dance, video, music and interdisciplinary performance work.  NDA’s founding mission was to support an artistic community with limited institutional resources, and to provide this community with increased opportunities to share experimental works with the public.  Today NDA remains dedicated to its founding principals and has expanded its programming to include services that enable artists’ career advancement.

NDA’s history of providing services to artists and audiences began in 1979 when Karen Bernard opened up her Tribeca loft as a low-fee and no-fee rehearsal space.  Organically, NDA’s programs developed as Bernard interacted with artists and best understood their needs.  From 1987 – 2004, NDA led a dance education program at the Early Childhood Center, P.S. 89 in Manhattan, linking working artists with budding movement innovators.  In 1986, NDA initiated the Performances Mix Festival – the first festival dedicated exclusively to Performance Art in lower Manhattan.  Currently NDA focuses on four initiatives: Performance Mix Festival, NDA Exchange, NDA Space Grant, and Karen Bernard/Solo.  Collectively these programs support the work of over 100 experimental artists per year.

New Dance Alliance has received public support from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Manhattan Borough President and Council Member, 1st District Alan J. Gerson. Private support has been received from Citibank; Consulate General of Switzerland; Foundation for Contemporary Arts; Experimental Television Center; Fund for the City of New York, Italian Cultural Institute; Mertz Gilmore Foundation; New York Foundation for the Arts Recovery Fund; Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (The Festival Hub is made ppossible by Swing Space, a program of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, supported by the September 11th Fund. Project space is donated by General Growth Properties); Lower Manhattan Development Corporation; Meet the Composer Creative Connection; Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant from New York State Council on the Arts; Puffin Foundation; The Andy Warhol Foundation; The Chase Manhattan Foundation; The Florence Gould Foundation; The Harkness Foundation for Dance; The Howard Gilmore Foundation; The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.; The Québec Government House, New York; The Trust for Mutual Understanding; The Verizon Foundation; WTC Business Recovery Grant Empire State; Local businesses; and Patrons and Friends of NDA.
